Holley Carburetor Rebuild Time-Lapse | Redline Rebuild - S1E5

author Hagerty   1 years ago

Carburetor rebuilds are obviously easier than engine rebuilds. Just consider the time involved: three minutes rather than five. What? We are of course talking about Redline Rebuild time lapses. In this go round, Davin Reckow rebuilds a Holley 4346, which can be found on Camaros, Chevelles, and Novas equipped with a 396-cid V-8 L78. This four-barrel helps the engine produce 375 hp and is a 780 cfm dual-vacuum-secondary carb, for those keeping score at home.

Ask and you shall receive! A 289 small-block Ford was high on the request list for our next Redline Rebuild, and we made it happen. Starting with a stock 289 engine out of a totaled 1964 Ford Fairlane, we decided to have some fun and upgrade from stock with a GT350-esque build. While Shelby started with a 271-hp HiPo K-code 289, our base engine needed quite a bit more massaging to get it up to snuff. With all period-correct upgrades including a new cam, Edelbrock F4B intake, carburetor, headers, and some mild porting of the heads, our output should come in at around 310 hp, up a good chunk from the stock 195 hp. Follow along as we compress three months of wrenching and 40,000 photos into an action-packed five minutes of engine rebuild glory. Now we just have to find a car in which to stick this beast. Redline Rebuilds are powered by Shell, featuring Pennzoil and Shell V-Power NITRO+ premium gasoline. After three months, 20,000 photos, and more than our share of hurdles (especially finding parts), we’ve completed another Redline Rebuild time-lapse video. This time around, Hagerty’s Davin Reckow tackles a two-wheel project, a bit of a Frankenstein bike with the heart of a 1957 Harley-Davidson XL Sportster. No seriously, its engine is an ironhead V-twin from a first-year Sportster. So strap on your helmet because we’re about to speed things up a bit. Don’t let anyone tell you that rebuilding an old Volkswagen Beetle engine is easy. After countless hours of work, some busted knuckles, more than a few trips to the parts store, some heavy-duty Googling, and another 30,000 photos, we present our seventh Redline Rebuild time-lapse video. Our 1973 Beetle trudged 2,500 miles from Portland, Oregon, to Traverse City, Michigan, in the middle of a frigid January. It has led a hard life, with a hodge-podge of parts from various years and some obvious mechanical and cosmetic shortcuts taken over the last five decades. While the beauty of the Beetle is that almost any part from any year will fit in some fashion, we didn’t take any shortcuts when it came to the engine. Many of the original parts were too far gone to reuse, biggest of which was the original VW magnesium case. The Beetle now has a brand-new aluminum case, along with a plethora of other new parts, and she is running better than ever! A Time lapse Photography rebuild of a Caterpillar C-18 Engine and A video of the first startup is also included.

The Chevy small-block V-8 is an engine that has touched so many lives that, no matter where your car brand loyalty lies, chances are good that you’ve got a personal story about one. It has powered tens of millions of passenger cars, trucks, race machines and boats. Calling it an American icon would not be an overstatement or hype. To celebrate 60 years of this icon, we took one apart and put it back together, and we recorded the process to share with you.
